Elon Musk has spread a fake story claiming that UK Prime Minister Keir Stramer is “thinking about building camps on the Falkland Islands to house far-right protesters.”
Musk reposted a “screenshot” of a fabricated news headline from what was supposedly the British publication Telegraph. It was originally published by Ashley Simon, co-leader of the fringe far-right party Britain First. The Telegraph confirmed that it had not published the material.
Within an hour, Musk had deleted his repost, and it was no longer on Simon’s page. However, the fake had already managed to get almost two million views.
Britain has seen dozens of far-right protests this weekend, sparked by an incident in Southport, England on July 29, when a 17-year-old boy attacked a preschool and stabbed three girls, aged 6, 7 and 9, to death.
Another 11 children and two adults were injured. Police suspect Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, born in Wales to Christian parents from Rwanda, of carrying out the attack. However, rumours spread online that the attacker was a Muslim asylum seeker who had entered Britain illegally on a boat. As a result, far-right activists began organising demonstrations against migration and Muslims via social media.
