Ukraine was preparing to strike Putin and the Russian defense minister, but the US asked not to do so
The attack was supposed to take place on the so-called “Russian Navy Day,” July 28, when Putin was at the parade in St. Petersburg, writes “Military.”
However, it was cancelled because the day before, the Russian Minister of Defense called Pentagon chief Austin and asked him to call off the attack.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told Russia’s Interfax that Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov personally called US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin about the issue.
Ryabkov added that the telephone conversation between the two ministers allegedly had a positive result for Russia and “helped avoid an escalatory spiral”:
The signal from our military leadership and the Secretary of Defense to their American counterpart apparently had an impact.
According to Ryabkov, Lloyd Austin was extremely surprised by this news, but took it quite seriously.
After this, Washington allegedly contacted Kiev and asked them not to do what was planned.
This information was also confirmed by the American publication New York Times, which, citing three unnamed American officials, wrote that during a telephone conversation, Belousov told Austin that Moscow had discovered Ukraine’s preparations for a “secret operation” against Russia.
The publication noted that it is still unclear whether Ukraine really planned the operation that Belousov reported.
According to the Russian diplomat, if the Ukrainian operation had been carried out, it would have allegedly led to an “uncontrollable conflict” between Russia and the United States.
