The leader of the Austrian nationalist FPO, Herbert Kickl, may enter into a political alliance with Viktor Orban’s Hungarian Fidesz party.

The growing popularity of far-right parties in Europe poses a problem for the European Union and Ukraine.

Against this background, it became known that the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a well-known supporter of the nationalist-conservative ideology, could get an influential ally, reports the Reuters news agency.

Media say some nationalist politicians have chosen a more moderate path after coming to power, but Austrian Freedom Party (FPO) leader Herbert Kickl may be an exception by ending a political alliance with the Hungarian Fidesz party, whose leader is Viktor Orban.

The Austrian FPO has a relatively high chance of winning the next parliamentary election, analysts believe. This fact may make it difficult for Europe to continue to support Kyiv and resist such antics as Orban’s uncoordinated trip to Russia on a so-called “peace mission.”

Herbert Kickl, who called the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen a “warmonger”, said earlier that he and Orban support a “peaceful solution to the war between Ukraine and Russia” and recalled Pope Francis’ controversial statement that Kyiv must have the “courage of the white flag” to conclude peace negotiations with aggressor Russia.

Slovakia is also pressuring Ukraine to come to terms with the Russian Federation. Prime Minister Robert Fico maintains close ties with Moscow, freezes military aid to Ukraine and opposes Kyiv’s entry into NATO. However, he did not join the alliance created by Kickl and Orbán.

The emergence of Viktor Orban’s allies at the head of the Austrian government will significantly complicate the problem of supporting Ukraine. The FPO, like Orban, criticizes support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

The FPO claims it is the only party that “takes Austria’s neutrality” seriously in the constitution. Many Austrians believed that avoiding any confrontation with great states like Russia would protect them. Polls show that a majority of voters want the country to remain neutral.

Therefore, Kickl argued that his policy in Ukraine involved possible threats to Austrian neutrality.
