In Russia, an anti-war activist died after a hunger strike at a pre-trial detention center

The activist was detained by FSB officers for criticizing Russia’s military offensive against Ukraine at the end of May this year.

In Russia, 39-year-old anti-war activist Pavel Kushnir died in a pre-trial detention center as a result of a dry hunger strike against the war in Ukraine. It was reported by Radio Liberty.

According to the publication Like thisKushnir died on July 27. This was reported by the head of the human rights organization Rus Sitting Olga Romanova and the musician’s long-time friend, pianist Olga Shkrigunova.

The activist was detained by FSB officers for criticizing the Russian military aggression against Ukraine at the end of May this year, and a criminal case was opened against him under the article on public calls for activities of terrorist.

He reportedly worked at the Philharmonic, published an anti-war book and ran the YouTube channel Foreign Agent Mulder with anti-fascist manifestos. Since November 2022, he has published four videos in which he poetically criticizes the policies of the Russian authorities and the war in Ukraine.

The activist grew up in Tambov and graduated from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. For seven years he worked as a soloist in the Kursk Regional Philharmonic, then for three years in the Kurgan Philharmonic. In 2023, he became a soloist of the Birobidzhan Regional Philharmonic. He died in the pre-trial detention center in Birobidzhan.
