The President of Ukraine spoke about Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance and asked for additional military assistance.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a speech at the NATO summit in Madrid, called on Alliance states to help prevent Russian terrorism against peaceful cities in Ukraine and “find a place” for Ukraine in the common security space.
In his speech, Zelensky said that the war, which has been going on for more than four months, should not last long, so Ukraine needs to be given more weapons, especially, more modern artillery. Zelensky also noted that NATO’s open door policy should not be the same as “the old Kyiv metro turnstiles: they are open, and when you climb, the turnstiles will close until you pay.
“For the sake of peace, the understanding of the eastern part of NATO must change. Is it not coincidental that all the Alliance countries in the east, all our neighbors, are in favor of Ukraine’s membership in NATO ? No, it was not an accident. It was logic. It was knowledge of life in our region. Is it “Ukraine has paid a little more? Isn’t our contribution to the preservation of both Europe and of civilization as a whole enough? So what else is needed? I can say what we need: we need security guarantees and you must find a place for Ukraine in the common security space, ”the president said.
The head of state stressed that the Alliance has two ways: “either – urgent assistance to Ukraine enough for victory, or – a postponed war between Russia and NATO.”
Ukraine also needs modern missiles and air defenses to protect civilians from Russian missile attacks and bombings, the president said.
“By giving them to us, you can completely break Russia’s tactics of destroying cities and intimidating civilians. This is a major thing. The distance from Kyiv to Madrid is less than range of missiles used against us. How can a state respond to such a threat without the help of partners? You can provide this assistance, “he said.
The President urged to support Ukraine not only through arms, but also financially and sanctions – “such as sanctions against Russia that will stop the ability to pay for the war.”
Recall that former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that during the NATO summit in Madrid, which began on June 29, historic decisions will be made.
