Although China lifted export bans on consumer drones, the Commerce Department confirmed that the civilian devices should not be used “as weapons of mass destruction, for terrorist or military purposes.”
China has adjusted export controls on drones intended for military use amid growing criticism from the United States and its allies over Russia’s support for the war against Ukraine. Bloomberg wrote this on Wednesday, July 31.
Drones with high-precision measurement equipment were added to the blacklist. These changes, made by several agencies including the Central Military Commission, will take effect on September 1.
Although China has lifted export bans on consumer drones, the Commerce Department confirmed that civilian devices should not be used for “proliferation weapons of mass destruction, terrorism or military purposes.”
The directive was issued shortly after Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba’s first visit to China since Russia’s 2022 invasion. Beijing has repeatedly rejected Western criticism of supplying Moscow with dual-use goods that could have military applications.
China opposes the use of drone exports for non-peaceful purposes, as well as individual countries imposing illegal sanctions on Chinese companies and individuals under the guise of using drones, added the Commerce Ministry.
Let’s recall that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that he received a clear signal from his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi that Beijing is not looking for “temporary solutions”, but is working for a sustainable and strategic solution to the problem of the war launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China favors the start of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
