Protesters say Nicolas Maduro’s victory was a fraud. The police had to use tear gas.
In Venezuela on Monday, July 29, spontaneous rallies began after the presidential election. Their participants believe the authorities rigged the election results in favor of the current head of state, Nicolas Maduro, Reuters reports.
It was noted that in the capital of Caracas and other cities, citizens carried out “cacherolazo” – a traditional form of protest in Latin America, when the crowd loudly makes noise with kitchen utensils. However, then the actions of the protesters became more aggressive, and elements of the road infrastructure were burned in the streets. Protesters began destroying statues of Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chavez. The police had to use tear gas in some places.
As reported, Nicolas Maduro has won the presidential election in Venezuela for the third time. With 80% of the votes counted, Maduro won more than 51% of the vote, ahead of Democratic Unitary Platform candidate Edmund Gonzalez Urrutia, who received more than 44%.
The opposition said its candidate Edmund Gonzalez Urrutia won 70% of the vote, not 44% as reported by the country’s Electoral Council.
