It is noted that three Ukrainians started among the sabre fencers in Paris, two of whom – Alina Komashchuk and Elena Krovatska – dropped out in the first round of the main draw.
Harlan, having won confident victories over Japanese Shihomi Fukushima (15:9), Azerbaijani Anna Basta (15:6) and Hungarian Anna Marton (15:7), lost to the second number in the world rankings, Frenchwoman Sari Balzer (7:15), in the fight for a place in the final.
In the bronze final, Harlan’s opponent was Korean Choi Sebin, whom the Ukrainian defeated with a score of 15:14.
The bronze medal won was the eighth Olympic medal in fencing in the history of Ukraine and the fifth medal in Harlan’s Olympic career, after gold in 2008 and silver in 2016 in the team tournament and two bronze medals in individual competitions (2016 and 2016).
Thus, in terms of the number of awards of all kinds, she repeated the Olympic record of Ukraine, which previously belonged to swimmer Yana Klochkova – five medals.
