In the 19th century, the plague caused more than 50 million deaths in Europe. In France, the last cases of plague began in 1945. Then the disease was discovered in Corsica.
Unknown persons sent a letter containing the plague virus to the French Ministry of Internal Affairs addressed to the head of the department, Gerald Darmanin. The French publication Le Figaro reported this on Sunday, July 28.
It is indicated that a letter addressed to Darmanin was found in the post office at a sorting center in the department of Côte d’Or: fine black powder was found in it. Experts analyzed the powder at the police nuclear, radiological, biological, chemical and explosives unit and found the presence of the plague virus in it.
The letter also contained racial slurs.
The contents of the letter were sent for another analysis, the final results are expected in the evening of July 29. The prosecutor’s office of Dijon has launched an investigation into this fact.
In Spain, a 74-year-old pensioner was sentenced to 18 years in prison, who in 2022 sent letters containing explosives to the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, as well as to the embassies of Ukraine and the United States .
It was previously reported that the Hungarian Embassy in Ukraine allegedly sent threats to the country’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó.
