The US Justice Department has asked a federal appeals court to uphold a law passed in April requiring the Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok assets in the US by January 19. Reuters wrote this the previous day, July 27.
It has been noted that TikTok poses a serious threat to US national security due to access to large amounts of personal data. The Justice Department fears that China may be secretly manipulating information through the app.
“The national security threat posed by TikTok is real. TikTok provides the Chinese government with the means to undermine US national security in two key ways: data collection and covert content manipulation,” it added.
We remind you that the US Congress approved the decision to ban the Chinese social network TikTok, which will no longer be available for download for 270 days unless the Chinese owner sells the platform.
The White House asked the DC Court of Appeals to throw out lawsuits by TikTok, parent company ByteDance and a group of TikTok creators seeking to block the law.
As we have already written, the topic of blocking TikTok is being discussed in Ukraine. It was actively promoted by the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech, Yaroslav Yurchyshyn. On April 1, the People’s Deputy said that the ban on use could become a reality in Ukraine if the blocking of TikTok is approved in the United States.
Let’s add that the European Commission gave the owner of TikTok one day to clarify about the new application.
