Amateur videos on social media showed the dead bodies of several white men and minor soldiers strewn on the ground near the destroyed vehicles, the Associated Press reported.
The rebels’ statement came after the Malayan army issued a statement on the evening of July 26 that two soldiers had been killed and 10 wounded in a rebel attack that also disabled two armoured vehicles and two pick-up trucks. The Malian army said it had killed about 20 rebels and destroyed several vehicles.
For his part, rebel coalition spokesman Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadan said that a two-day battle had taken place on the outskirts of the village of Tinzawaten and that the rebels had “defeated an entire column of the Malian army and Russian mercenaries.”
According to Ramadan, “the enemy suffered huge losses in lives and equipment, including dozens of killed and wounded.” He also said that some “Malian soldiers and mercenaries from the Wagner groups surrendered to the Tuareg fighters.”
