Representatives of the former president say that the reason for this decision is that the Democrats have not yet officially elected their candidate.
US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s team has abandoned the debate with their main competitor, Kamala Harris, after she called out her counterpart in a previously planned face-to-face meeting. This was said by Trump’s spokesman Stephen Cheng, Bloomberg news agency reports.
According to him, the planning of the debate “cannot be completed until the Democrats have officially decided on their candidate.”
“We believe it would be inappropriate to plan any events with Harris, as it is possible that Democrats may still change their minds,” the spokesperson assured.
Harris himself made an ironic statement on the social network X in response to this position of the Trump team.
“What about the boasted ‘anytime, anywhere’?”
Harris is currently the only declared Democratic presidential candidate and has the support of nearly all of the party’s leading figures.
The debate between Trump and current US President Joe Biden on June 27 played in favor of the Republican and was a notable blow for the Democrats. The incumbent’s poor performance caused panic in the party about his age and ability to beat Trump, ultimately ousting Biden from the race and leading to his replacement by Harris.
The media recalled that the second debate between Biden and Trump took place on September 10. They agreed before the president left the race. However, on Tuesday, Trump, although he agreed to debate Harris, unexpectedly announced that he wanted to change the moderator – instead of ABC News, he wanted the conservative and more favorable Fox News.
