US President Joe Biden addressed the nation, announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race and passing the baton to a “new generation.”
President Joe Biden of the United States spoke to the American people where he explained the reasons for withdrawing his candidacy from the presidential race. This was stated on Wednesday, July 24, on the White House leader’s page at social networks X.
In a speech to the nation from the Oval Office, Biden called his decision to leave the race “a question of democracy” and called the 2024 presidential election a choice “between forward and backward, between hope and hatred.”
“I believe that my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for the future of America deserve a second term. But nothing, nothing will stand in the way of saving our democracy – including personal ambition .”
So I decided that the best way forward was to pass the torch to a new generation. This is the best way to unite our country,” he said.
The US President also said that Americans should unite to protect the country and added that “Americans are a great nation because we are good people.”
Biden also announced priorities for the last six months of his presidency: among them, working to end the war in the Gaza Strip and stopping Vladimir Putin in Ukraine.
“The next six months will be focused on doing my job as President. That means I will continue to reduce costs for hard-working families, grow our economy. I will continue to protect our personal liberties and our civil rights, from voting to elections. I Will continue to speak out against hate extremism and make it clear that there is no place for political violence or violence of any kind in America, ever, ever.
I will continue to work to end the war in Gaza. Bring home all the hostages, bring peace and security to the Middle East and end this war. We will also continue to rally a coalition of proud nations to prevent Putin from occupying Ukraine,” he said.
Let’s remember that on July 21, Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the election. This happened after pressure from Democrats after a disastrous debate with US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. He assured that he will not resign early and will remain president until the end of his term.
In his speech, Biden proposed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for president. Some Republicans have called on Biden to resign.
