Hungary’s presidency of the Council of the EU has been marked by several scandals related to Budapest’s anti-Ukrainian policy.
The European Union decided to move the August meetings of foreign and defense ministers from Budapest to Brussels in protest against Hungarian policies. This was announced by the EU’s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, on Monday, July 22, CNN wrote.
It is noted that this action is the latest step in the escalation of the dispute between the EU and Hungary over Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s position on the war in Ukraine.
In particular, Orban has recently angered EU leaders by saying that the EU is following a “military policy.”
In response to these words, EU High Representative Josep Borrell said at a press conference in Brussels: “I realize that we must send a signal, even if it is a symbolic signal that this is against the foreign policy of the European Union and to disqualify the policy The EU as a “war party” must have certain consequences.”
Borrell added that “the policy of the European Union is not pro-war.” He emphasized that “the only one who supports the war is Putin.”
“Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the victim exercising its legitimate right to self-defense. Russia is waging a war of aggression, openly violating international law, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter ,” Michel wrote. .
Planned informal EU Council meetings of foreign and defense ministers are due to take place in Budapest from 28 to 30 August as Hungary holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.
Orban also angered EU lawmakers during his recent so-called “peacekeeping missions” in early July – meeting with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing and former US President Donald Trump in his Mar -a-Ly residence.
As reported, on Monday Hungary again blocked EU arms funds for Ukraine.
We remind you that Hungary became the only EU country that did not sign a joint statement of fifty states condemning the Russian Federation at the UN Security Council.
