EU foreign ministers are highly critical of Budapest’s “peace initiatives”.
The foreign ministers of the European Union countries failed to agree on the release of funds from the European Peace Fund to finance Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, spoke about the results of the meeting of officials in Brussels, European Pravda reports.
According to Borrell, the decision was sabotaged by a member state, which called the purchase of weapons for Ukraine “something unacceptable and intolerable.” At the same time, all other EU countries insisted on ending the blockade, especially in light of the fact that Russia attacked Ukrainian hospitals.
Although Borrell did not name the country opposing the support for Ukraine, it is known that Hungary has blocked more than 6 billion euros of military aid for Ukraine. Viktor Orbán’s government cannot even be convinced of the guarantee that Budapest’s contributions to the European Peace Fund are not used to buy weapons.
In a press conference following the Council of Ministers of the EU on Foreign Affairs, Borrell also said that all EU members, with one exception, are very critical of the “peace initiatives” towards Ukraine from the representatives of the Hungarian government, which presides over the EU’s rotating presidency.
Borrell also condemned the positions of the Hungarian Foreign Minister, who at a meeting of the UN Security Council, in a speech at the invitation of the Russian presidency of the Republic of Belarus, accused the EU of following a “policy of support for war” in relation to Ukraine.
He emphasized that Russia is the aggressor violating the UN Charter, and Ukraine is the victim of aggression, using its fundamental right of self-defense.
We remind you that Hungary became the only EU country that did not sign a joint statement of fifty states condemning the Russian Federation at the UN Security Council.
The EU has said whether it is possible to remove Hungary from its chairmanship
