Azerbaijan proposed to Ukraine and the European Union to supply natural gas to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system against the backdrop of the expiration of the contract with the Russian Federation. This was reported by Bloomberg news agency.
Negotiations with Ukraine, the EU and Russia are ongoing, and all parties seem interested in expanding supplies, the media note.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev noted that gas production in his country will increase thanks to new and existing projects in the Caspian Sea.
In 2022, Baku signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Commission to double gas exports to Europe to 20 billion cubic meters by 2027. According to Aliyev, his country is “moving towards this goal.”
This year, exports to Europe will increase to nearly 13 billion cubic meters from 11.8 billion cubic meters in 2023 and 8 billion cubic meters in 2021.
Supplies will be carried out along the Southern Gas Corridor, which connects Azerbaijan to Europe via Georgia and Turkey.
As already written, the European Union offered Ukraine to maintain gas transit in the country after the end of the contract with Russia, but to pump gas from Azerbaijan.
