A boat carrying Haitian migrants caught fire in the sea near Haiti – 39 people died, and 41 others were rescued. The Guardian reported this.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Port-au-Prince, the boat, carrying more than 80 people, left Fort Saint-Michel in northern Haiti and headed for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The boat’s passengers used matches to light candles in a ritual asking for safe passage, causing the fuel barrels to catch fire and explode.
41 people survived the fire and were rescued by the Haitian coast guard. They are currently receiving care and support from IOM, and 11 of them have been taken to a nearby hospital.
The extreme violence caused by gangs in Haiti in recent months has forced Haitians to flee the country, according to Gregoire Goodstein, head of the IOM Haiti Office.
Armed gangs have taken over much of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The violence has triggered a humanitarian crisis that has forced nearly 600,000 people to flee their homes and left 5 million people facing severe food shortages.
We remind you that more than 60 migrants have drowned off the coast of Libya, including children.
Earlier, an empty boatload of migrants washed ashore in Israel.
