Several thousand Ukrainians living in Poland have already registered to join the Ukrainian Legion. The country is starting to train the first Ukrainian brigade of volunteers.
The Polish authorities will not search for Ukrainian citizens on the country’s territory in order to attract them to the Ukrainian Legion. This was announced on Friday, July 19, on Polish Radio by the country’s Deputy Defense Minister Pavel Zalewski.
“The provisions in the security agreement on the creation of a legion in Poland will not impose on the country any obligations beyond the current legal framework,” he explained.
Zalevsky said that participation in the legion is voluntary and that Ukrainians must decide for themselves whether to become legionnaires.
The deputy minister explained that the volunteers who agree to join the Legion “will be called up to the Armed Forces of Ukraine based on the Ukrainian rules at Ukrainian consular offices,” and on the territory of Poland “will undergo basic training , which will be provided by the Polish army at one of the training grounds.”
“The recruitment will take place with the help of the Ukrainian consular offices,” he emphasized.
After school, according to Zalevsky, Ukrainian soldiers will go to Ukraine – and there, in accordance with the law of Ukraine and in accordance with the tasks they will receive, they will perform military service on the front line.
He also emphasized that Ukrainian military personnel have the right to return, because “it is important that after completing military service they can return to where they left, where they left their families.”
Note that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a bilateral security agreement between the countries. In particular, the document contains an agreement on the formation and training of the Ukrainian Legion on the territory of Poland.
It was previously reported that a recruiting project for UAV operators is starting.
