He became the first foreign visitor to 10 Downing Street when the new prime minister moved in.
Starmer described the visit to Downing Street as “a very special moment”.
Zelensky is expected to address the Cabinet and could become the first foreign leader to personally address the Cabinet since 1997, The Guardian notes. Then, Bill Clinton addressed officials.
Zelensky is expected to brief ministers on the situation in Ukraine, the need to build up Europe’s defence industrial base and the terms of a £3.5bn credit line for defence exports.
Ahead of the meeting, the British prime minister said 44 European countries had approved a plan to combat the “shadow fleet” of Russian oil tankers used to circumvent international sanctions.
Arriving at the British Prime Minister’s residence at 10 Downing Street, Zelensky thanked Britain for its support and solidarity with Ukraine.
Thank you for the invitation and for the honor of being here. Thank you for this unity. We feel this support, and your serious decisions helped protect freedom and democracy in Ukraine and helped the Ukrainian people.”
I also want to discuss with you today serious decisions that could help us in this war, Zelensky added.
