French President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and the entire government. The cabinet will remain in office until a new French government is formed, the Elysee Palace wrote.

Attal was appointed in January this year, with Macron seen as wanting to reboot the government ahead of the European elections.
Macron accepted his prime minister’s resignation on the second attempt. Attal had resigned on July 8, immediately after winning the left-wing elections. Macron then refused to accept his resignation and asked him to temporarily remain in office as head of government.
The left-wing coalition “New Popular Front” won the parliamentary elections in France. Macron’s centrist coalition took second place, and the far-right “National Rally” – third. Before the second round, Macron agreed to cooperate with the left-wing coalition and Marine Le Pen won.
The Summer Olympics open in Paris on July 24.
