The majority of Russians abroad have applied for permanent residence permits, long-term visas, or sought political protection.
Since 2022, at least 666 thousand people have left Russia and never returned. This is stated in a study by the Russian online publication The Bell.
Journalists used data provided in response to queries, as well as official statistics and statements by officials and diplomats.
Most of these 666,000 are applying for permanent residence permits, long-term visas or political protection.
The most popular destinations for Russians are Armenia (110 thousand Russians go there), Kazakhstan (80 thousand), Israel (80 thousand), Georgia (74 thousand), and the USA (48 thousand).
Another 36 thousand Russians moved to Germany, 30 thousand to Serbia, 28 to Turkey, 19 to South Korea, 18 to Latvia, 16 to Spain.
However, journalists note that not all countries provided data: in particular, Thailand and Indonesia did not respond to requests. In addition, not all countries have published data for 2023 (eg Portugal).
We previously wrote that a mass exodus of IT specialists was recorded in Russia.
