States will encourage the diplomatic process, but only when Ukraine chooses the form and content of the negotiations.
The United States supports Ukraine’s initiative to persuade Russia to participate in the second Peace Summit, since only Kyiv should decide when to negotiate with the aggressor country. This is what US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a briefing.
When asked if US officials encouraged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to invite Russia to the upcoming event, he replied that the issue was discussed between the Ukrainian and American sides.
“But, as we said earlier, any decisions in diplomatic negotiations are a decision that should be made by Ukraine, not by the United States, not by any other country that is not a party to the conflict,” Miller said.
The State Department spokesman noted that Ukraine will decide when and in what form to start negotiations with Russia. And Washington, as a partner, will support Kyiv if they choose this path.
“We have always been clear about this. And I would note – and this is related to how the Kremlin responded, even initially, to those statements from Ukraine – we always support diplomacy when Ukraine is ready, but never it became clear that the Kremlin was ready for real diplomacy,” Miller added.
Let’s remember that on June 15-16 the first Peace Summit was held in Switzerland with the participation of 100 countries and international organizations.
Following its results, Zelensky said that the second Peace Summit “will be held in months, not years,” and that there will be Russian representatives there. The President of Ukraine believes that the event can be held in the UAE or Saudi Arabia.
The Kremlin says Russia is ready for dialogue on the “Ukrainian settlement,” but Moscow must understand what will be discussed at the second Peace Summit.
