Poland has approached the European Commission with a proposal to supply Ukraine with energy produced from Polish coal, on the condition that Poland does not pay for emissions.
According to the EC spokesman on Friday, “the Polish authorities have asked the Commission to hold a meeting to discuss this issue.”
However, he said, “electricity produced by power plants in the EU and supplied to Ukraine falls under the normal ETS rules: power plants must surrender quotas and, therefore, pay for these emissions.”
He added that the EC remains in favor of supporting Ukraine’s energy system through next winter, but would not like to speculate on the Polish idea because it does not know the details.
According to the speaker, the European Commission is focused on increasing Ukraine’s export capacity.
