NATO’s eastern allies, mainly the Baltic states and Poland, have long called for more support for Ukraine.
The NATO assistance provided by the Alliance to Ukraine allows Kyiv to fight, but does not allow it to win on the battlefield. Foreign Policy wrote this on Saturday, July 13.
Thus, analyzing the NATO summit held in Washington, the magazine points out that the help given by the West to Ukraine allows the Armed Forces of Ukraine to defend itself, but it does not allow it to win the war.
“Mostly we support Ukraine to continue to fight and make some progress, not to win the war. We have no real strategy for this war,” said Liana Fix, a fellow in European affairs at the Council on Foreign Relations.
He noted that while Poland and the Baltic states have long called for more support for Ukraine, allies with the deepest pockets and sophisticated weapons systems, especially the United States, have made a more cautious approach.
“The restoration of support comes as the Russian Federation has been launching airstrikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leading to large-scale power outages in recent months,” Fix said.
As the publication notes, analysts doubt that the events announced at the summit could change the course of events on the battlefield.
“There is a big gap between what we say, that we want to restore the sovereignty of Ukraine, and what we actually do. Now it seems that we all say it, but people don’t really believe it, ” said the director of the transatlantic security program, Andrea Kendall-Taylor.
The formal leader of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, plans to discuss “problems” in Ukraine with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in the near future.
