Ukraine’s ATACMS missile strike could change where Russia is deploying vital air defense systems to protect critical infrastructure.
Ukraine is armed with American-made ATACMS missiles and can attack any point in Russian-occupied Crimea. The New York Times writes about it on Saturday, July 13.
“Russia first used the occupied Crimea as a springboard for its full-scale invasion, and then as a base for aerial bombing. However, now the missiles are increasingly coming in the opposite direction,” wrote American journalists .
They indicate that the potential targets of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are airfields, air defense systems and logistics centers of the Russian occupiers.
“Ukraine aims to destroy the critical base of the Russians that allows them to wage war,” the publication wrote.
A senior US official told reporters that Ukraine was using US-supplied long-range missiles “very effectively”. He also added that Ukraine has enough ATACMS missiles to continue attacking military targets in Crimea. According to him, the ammunition is constantly replenished, and we are not talking about dozens, but hundreds.
The NYT did not rule out that strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Crimea could force Moscow to move some aircraft from the peninsula.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes that Ukraine has the right to use weapons provided by allies to strike legitimate military targets on Russian territory.
