The Hungarian prime minister took part in the NATO summit after a self-proclaimed “peace mission”, during which he visited Kyiv, Moscow and Beijing “without any coordination with EU and NATO members.”
During the NATO summit in Washington, USA, Hungary refused to join Kyiv’s military support and opposed Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance. Bloomberg wrote this on Saturday, July 13, citing its own sources.
“During the NATO summit in Washington, Hungary refused to participate in military support for Ukraine Moreover, in a plenary meeting with the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Ukraine should not join NATO,” the publication pointed out.
Budapest’s position angered the allies. They said that “Hungary’s history shows why Ukraine should be in the Alliance.”
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, whose country held the rotating EU presidency last month, said Hungary’s position undermined confidence in the country’s six-month tenure at the EU helm.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock called the Hungarian leader’s self-proclaimed peacekeeping mission “a selfish trip by Orban.”
Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson says the EU presidency appears to have been stolen.
As you know, after his visit to Kyiv, Orban visited Moscow and Beijing, where he also discussed the “peace initiative” for Ukraine. During the NATO summit in Washington, the Hungarian Prime Minister spoke on the same topic to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
