EU ambassadors appealed to the Hungarian representative with a request to “stop obstructive attempts and comply with the requirements of loyalty to the EU.”
The German Foreign Ministry criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s activity in the foreign policy arena, which he presented against the backdrop of the EU Council presidency, DPA reports on Friday, July 12.
“We are now on the twelfth day (of Hungary’s presidency of the EU – ed.), and a lot of damage has already been done,” ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer said at a briefing.
He noted that EU ambassadors made this clear to the Hungarian Ambassador at the last meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives. They again appealed to the Hungarian side with a request to “stop obstructive attempts and comply with the requirements of loyalty to the EU.”
Fischer stressed that Orban cannot speak on behalf of the EU during his trip, as this is the competence of the President of the European Council and the High Representative for Foreign Policy.
In Germany, these visits of the head of the Hungarian government were “viewed with great astonishment and skepticism.” This behavior, according to the diplomat, is contrary to the demands of the EU for loyalty, especially the role of the country that holds the presidency of the Council, to be a neutral mediator between member states and try promote EU processes and EU decisions. -making processes in this way to achieve good results. Orban is doing the opposite now.
Fischer recalled the EU’s consolidated position towards Ukraine. “The joint position of the EU regarding the war of aggression of Russia against Ukraine is clear and unambiguous, supported and obliged to implement by Hungary, and we expect them from the implementation of the President of Hungary. The position must be immediately that Russia stops the war against Ukraine, which violates international law,” the spokesman of the German Foreign Ministry stressed, adding. that the EU stands on the side of Ukraine.
As you know, after his visit to Kyiv, Orban visited Moscow and Beijing, where he also discussed the “peace initiative” for Ukraine. During the NATO summit in Washington, the Hungarian Prime Minister spoke on the same topic to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
