Zelensky called it another important step towards restoring respect for the UN Charter and international law.
The UN General Assembly on Thursday, July 11, adopted a resolution initiated by Ukraine on the safety and protection of nuclear facilities, in particular, the Zaporozhye NPP.
The document contains a request for Russia to withdraw its troops from the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. The resolution also strongly supports the IAEA’s mandate to address nuclear safety and security risks during armed conflict and recognizes the importance of the agency’s principles to help ensure the protection of the Zaporizhia NPP.
99 countries voted for the document, 9 against, and 60 abstained.
President Volodymyr Zelensky called it another important step to restore respect for the UN Charter and international law.
As Zelensky noted, the document reiterates the “need for demilitarization and de-occupation” of the Zaporizhia NPP in light of Russia’s failure to comply with IAEA governing resolutions.
“This vote is based on the discussions and decisions made at the first Peace Summit, where the main issue is the first paragraph of the Peace Formula, “Radiation and Nuclear Safety,” the president wrote.
The head of state expressed gratitude to all partners for their help “in restoring security in all territories destroyed by the Russian aggression.”
“By working together, we can protect the basic norms of international law and common values,” Zelensky added.
Meanwhile, the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN called the adopted resolution on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant a “political project” that “can only encourage supporters of the war in Europe, the USA and Ukraine.”
Let’s recall that at the beginning of July, the IAEA announced that drones attacked an electrical substation of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant.
Earlier, the IAEA announced three direct hits on the protective structures of the main reactor of the Zaporizhia NPP. Rosatom has traditionally blamed the Ukrainian military for the strike.
