The intentions of the current government of Georgia are not clear to the leaders of the European Union: the law on the transparency of foreign influence is clearly a step backwards, the ambassador said.
The Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, Pavel Gerchinsky, said that Georgia’s accession to the EU has been suspended. He told reporters about it, his words were quoted by SOVA.
Gerchinsky noted that on June 27, the presidents and prime ministers of EU countries met in Brussels and made several important decisions, including the suspension of Georgia’s accession process. The reason is the adoption of “Russian law” – the so-called law on “foreign agents”.
“Unfortunately, and I’m sorry to say, they also agreed to stop the process of Georgia’s accession to the European Union. This was very clearly stated at the end of the European Council. Read carefully. The intentions of the current government of Georgia is not clear to the leaders of the European Union The law on the transparency of foreign influence is clearly a step back,” said the ambassador.
Pavel Gerchinsky also reported that the European Union has frozen 30 million euros allocated to support the Georgian defense forces against the background of the anti-Western turn of the Georgian authorities, the same publication reports.
“Regarding cooperation in the field of security and defense, unfortunately, we have to inform you that the leaders have also decided to freeze the money allocated in support of the Georgian Defense Forces within the framework of the European Peace Fund ( EPF). At the moment, the money that we planned to transfer to the defense of the Ministry, and it is 30 million euros, is frozen, “said Gerchinsky.
According to him, this is just the first step, there will be more to come.
“Our direct aid to the government of Georgia will be reduced, and we will try to transfer this direct aid to the government to civil society and the media. It was announced after the meeting of foreign ministers in Luxembourg,” said Gerchinsky.
Let’s recall that on May 14, the Georgian parliament finally adopted a bill on the transparency of foreign influence, which led to mass protests.
The US said it was introducing a new policy to impose visa restrictions on Georgia because of the “foreign agents” law.
