During the NATO summit, Ukraine can expect good news about strengthening its air defense, including seven Patriot systems requested by Kyiv.
US Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith said that during the NATO Summit in Washington, Ukraine can expect positive news about air defense, in particular Patriot systems, Voice of America reports.
“There will be fresh air defense news. The Ukrainians asked NATO for seven Patriot systems in April. And we have a very positive response to it, which will come in the coming days,” Smith said.
He noted that “it’s going to be a big week” in Washington. And he called for monitoring “specific announcements coming for Ukraine, for NATO allies, news about defense production, about maintenance, about cybersecurity.”
The ambassador also announced financial obligations and “Ukraine and Moscow will clearly understand that we, transatlantic partners, will not retreat anywhere.”
Smith noted that during the summit a “bridge to membership” would be prepared for Ukraine.
“What does this mean? It means that the alliance will announce that it will take on the role of coordinator of the aid that will come to Ukraine, as well as the training of the Ukrainian forces that we are all conducting now,” said ambassador
At the same time, he confirmed that “the Alliance will not give Ukraine an invitation to join now, in July 2024.”
Earlier it was also reported that the Netherlands is “close” to moving Patriot launchers to Ukraine.
Germany also reported the transfer of the Patriot complex with spare parts to Ukraine.
