NATO leaders will receive an update on plans in Washington at the summit.
NATO will need 35 to 50 additional brigades to fully implement its new plans to defend against an attack from Russia. Reuters wrote this on July 8, citing military sources.
The brigade consists of 3,000 to 7,000 troops, so creating another 35 to 50 units will be a big challenge. According to the source, only Germany needs to quadruple its air defense forces and means.
It is not yet clear where NATO allies might source additional personnel for the 35-50 brigades.
At a summit in Vilnius last year, NATO leaders agreed on the alliance’s first major defense plans. Since then, officials have been working to tailor those documents to the specific needs of the military.
NATO leaders are expected to receive an update on the plans in Washington this week at a summit to mark the alliance’s 75th anniversary.
“Air and missile defense, long-range weapons, logistics, as well as large ground maneuver formations are among our top priorities,” a NATO official commented on the situation.
Let’s recall that the Finnish parliament previously approved a defense cooperation agreement and gave the United States access to 15 military facilities.
