Exemplary designs will be tested, in particular, using 155-mm shells. 60 million euros will be spent on construction.

Estonia will start building a defense line on the border with Russia in 2025. As part of the project, 600 bunkers will be put to use, ERR reported yesterday, July 7.

According to the head of the infrastructure department of the state defense investment center, Kadi-Kai Kollo, based on the results of the test prototypes, the authorities will choose one, after which they will announce a tender for construction of bunkers for the entire defense line.

A total of three prototypes are planned to be built, and testing will begin in September.

Collo noted that when determining the requirements for the protective structure, the experience of the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine was taken into account.

It was noted that the bunker should accommodate up to ten soldiers with equipment and should have a place for food. Concrete is chosen as the main material.

Kimmo Liivak, a member of the board of the contractor Warren Concrete, said that the difference between the samples depends on the time and cost of their production, methods of transportation, and the speed of installation.

At the same time, the main goal is to ensure the safety of people. Because of this, three design options will be examined, in particular, using 155-mm shells.

According to preliminary estimates, 60 million euros will be spent on construction. In addition to the bunkers, the defense line would include anti-tank barriers and a barbed wire fence.

Plans for its creation became known in January 2024. The line will be built as part of the Baltic Defense Line on the border of Russia and the Republic of Belarus.

Note that Estonia plans to start investing more than 3% of its gross domestic product in defense in the coming years. Estonia will also invest 0.25% of GDP in the defense of Ukraine.

It was previously reported that European NATO members will collectively spend more than 2% of GDP on defense for the first time.
