    The second round of parliamentary elections took place in France today, July 7.

    According to the exit poll conducted by the Ipsos Institute together with the Talan group, the left-wing coalition “New Popular Front” is leading in the voting results, Le Monde reports.

    According to the exit poll results:

    • The New Popular Front could receive between 180 and 215 seats;
    • Emmanuel Macron’s presidential coalition will receive 150-180 seats;
    • Marine Le Pen’s right-wing populist National Rally will receive 120-150 mandates.

    If the final election results do not differ from these figures, none of these political forces will receive an absolute majority in parliament, so they will have to negotiate a coalition.

    Thus, the leader of the “Unbowed France” alliance of the left, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, has already stated that Macron should appoint a representative of the left bloc as prime minister. The office of the French president said that he is currently analyzing the results of the last elections and will wait until the full picture appears in parliament before making the necessary further decisions, France 24 reports.

    The President, as the guarantor of our institutions, will respect the choice of the French people, the department said in a statement.

    Macron dissolved parliament and called snap elections after the far-right routed his centrist alliance in the European Parliament elections on June 9.

    Left-wing parties, including the far-left France Insoumise, the Communists, the centre-left Socialists and the Greens, hastily agreed to form an alliance called the New Popular Front in the days after Macron’s shock decision.

    After the first round, the far-right National Rally led with 33% of the vote, followed by the New Popular Front with almost 28%, and Macron’s ruling coalition lagging behind with 20%.

    The election results are expected to impact support for Ukraine, global diplomacy and the EU’s economic stability, and could weaken Macron’s influence in his final years as president.
