The head of the Slovak government has not appeared in public since May 15, when an attempt was made on his life, as a result of which he was in critical condition, and a few hours later he underwent surgery.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico made his first public appearance since the assassination attempt – he spoke from the podium at an evening ceremony to mark the Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, a public holiday in Slovakia. Reuters reported this on Friday, July 5.
Slovak politicians greeted Fico with a standing ovation.
In his speech, the prime minister criticized “ridiculous progressive and liberal ideologies” and added that they should be opposed because they hurt Slovakia. He added that “the fight against progressivism will probably require a constitutional amendment.”
According to the Slovak Prime Minister, society should think about what is happening in Slovakia and Europe.
He expressed admiration for Orban, whose country has held the EU Council presidency since early July, and has already visited Kyiv and Moscow.
“Peaceful initiatives are never enough,” Fico said, adding that if he was healthy, he would join him.
He also said that “the situation in Ukraine could get out of control and lead to a large-scale uncontrolled military conflict.”
We remind you that on May 15, 71-year-old Juraj Cintula shot Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. The assassination attempt took place after the government retreated to the city of Gandlova.
In early June, Fico recorded his first appeal since the assassination attempt, in which he announced his intentions to return to work in a few weeks.
The government said that after surviving the assassination attempt, Fico will have permanent health problems.
