The SBU said that all three worked in a local cafe.
On orders from the Russian special services, they were preparing a massive missile and drone strike on the military infrastructure of the regional center.
To establish the coordinates of potential targets, the suspects walked around the city under the guise of friendly walks.
In the event of finding the “right” object, the agents took pictures against its background, in particular, they took selfies with reference to the location.
The enemy was most interested in the locations of military registration and enlistment offices and medical institutions where Ukrainian defenders were receiving treatment.
The defendants also tried to identify the combat positions of air defense and coast guard units protecting the city from the air and sea.
The agents sent the information they received to their FSB supervisor via messenger.
To maintain secrecy during correspondence, they hid behind fictitious nicknames and also used an anonymous chat. For each completed task, the defendants received a monetary “reward” from the Russian Federation.
In addition, the agents asked the occupiers for “timely evacuation” and employment in one of the Russian special services.
The SBU documented the spy group and detained all three defendants when they were preparing a report to the FSB. The SBU also took additional measures to secure the locations of Ukrainian troops.
Based on the evidence obtained, the Security Service investigators informed the detainees of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 28, Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed by a group of persons under martial law).
The perpetrators are in custody and face life imprisonment.
