The proportion of supporters of nuclear escalation among residents of the Russian Federation became a record for the entire war.
More than a third of Russian citizens believe that the use of nuclear weapons in the war against Ukraine is “rational.” This is confirmed by the results of a survey conducted in June 2024 by the Levada Center and published on July 4, Thursday.
According to the survey, 10% of respondents clearly support a nuclear strike on Ukraine, and another 24% consider it advisable.
Sociologists indicate that the share of supporters of nuclear escalation has increased by five percentage points over the past year and has become a record for the entire war.
The majority is still against the use of nuclear weapons – 52%, but their share is decreasing: in April 2023 there were 56%.
Of those who want to strike Ukraine with a nuclear weapon, most are pensioners. They often watch television and approve of Vladimir Putin’s activities.
“In the age group 55+, the share of approving responses to a nuclear strike reached 35%, and among those who get information from TV programs – 41%,” said the results of survey.
At the same time, young Russians are less actively in favor of a nuclear strike on a neighboring country.
“The view that the use of nuclear weapons is unjustifiable is more common among young Russians (63% aged 18-24), among those who believe the country is headed in the wrong direction (64%) and among those do not agree with the activity of the current president (72%), “said the findings of the Russian non-governmental organization Levada Center.
Let’s remember that the previous Russian dictator Vladimir Putin threatened “tragic consequences” for countries that dared to send their military to Ukraine.
The EU commented on Putin’s statements, noting that nuclear threats are completely unacceptable and inappropriate. And the United States recalled that they had already warned Russia about the consequences of using nuclear weapons.
