Yerevan is trying to diversify economic relations with international partners, as it does in the security sector.
Armenia is discussing with the United States the construction of a new nuclear power plant, which should replace the only Armenian nuclear power plant in Metsamor, which was built in the late 1970s. Radio Azatutyun writes about it.
According to the Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic, Armen Grigoryan, the process has moved to the substantive phase. The parties discuss the legal basis.
“I can say that the ball is in the court of the US. We hope that the internal procedures in the US will be completed, after that we will work,” said Grigoryan.
The official emphasized that Yerevan is trying to diversify economic relations with international partners, as it does in the security sector.
The Metsamor nuclear power plant, which produces 40% of Armenia’s electricity, is due to be decommissioned in 2036. It consists of two power units based on earthquake-resistant reactors of the VVER-440 type. In 2021, the units were modernized with the help of Rosatom.
In 2022, Armenia announced plans to build a new nuclear power plant and signed a memorandum of understanding with the United States on strategic nuclear cooperation.
Washington is assessing the possibility of building a nuclear power plant in Armenia equipped with small modular reactors (SMRs). The United States emphasized that American technologies could make Armenia less dependent on Russia.
In May 2024, the Armenian government announced that it was negotiating this project with the United States, Russia and South Korea.
Let’s recall that in June, Bulgaria for the first time imported fuel for nuclear power plants not from Russia, but from the United States.
