Raising your hand in greeting is now illegal – regardless of whether you do it with your left or right hand. In Germany, symbols of National Socialism, such as the Nazi salute, are prohibited under Article 86 of the Criminal Code on unconstitutional symbols.
The Higher Regional Court of North Rhine-Westphalia ruled on July 1, 2024 that the Nazi salute with the left hand is as illegal as the Nazi salute with the right. The newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung writes about it.
This is the greeting under Hitler, when the right hand is raised in front of the approaching person.
In November 2022, when the G7 foreign ministers meeting took place in Munster, left-wing activists staged a protest. In this regard, a 51-year-old resident of Bremen, who met them, made a public Nazi salute, but with his left hand. In this way the man tried to evade the law. According to his own statement, he deliberately used his left hand for provocation.
The man was charged and sentenced to a 600 euro fine. Since then, he has appealed several times. However, a court ruling on July 1 finally determined that saluting with an outstretched left hand is also a criminal offense.
Therefore, the man’s sentence was upheld. Previously, the Constitutional Court of Germany also agreed with this.
We remind you that on the eve of the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation and the Day of Victory over Nazism in the Second World War, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance presented a new slogan – If we defeat the Nazis, we will also defeat the racists. !
Recently, in the town of Grevesmühlen in northeastern Germany, a group of people accused of racism attacked two girls and their father.
