More than 15 thousand people attended the ceremony, although the official permission to hold it was granted on the condition that no more than 5 thousand people would participate in the event.
At least 60 people have died in a stampede at a religious ceremony attended by thousands in northern India. The Associated Press news agency reported this on Tuesday, July 2, with reference to local officials.
More than 150 more people were taken to hospitals in the city of Hathras in Uttar Pradesh state. Medical workers said the death toll could rise.
According to the police, it is possible that the stampede happened because of the overcrowding in the tent where the believers gathered.
It was reported that more than 15 thousand people attended the ceremony, although official permission to hold it was granted on the condition that no more than 5 thousand people would participate in the event.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called the incident a “highly unfortunate and baffling” event and said state authorities would conduct an investigation into the incident.
It will be remembered that last year in Nigeria the roof of a mosque fell while hundreds of people were in the building.
