This was announced today, June 26, on the messenger website.
The ICQ messenger was created by the Israeli company Mirabilis in 1996. It was one of the first stand-alone instant messaging (IM) programs and the first such platform to be widely used.
In 1998, the messenger was acquired by the American company AOL, and in 2010 ICQ acquired the Russian Mail.ru Group, which became VK in 2021. VK announced the closure of the messenger at the end of May, noting that they plan to focus on the development of their other similar products.
At the peak of its popularity in 2001, ICQ had more than 100 million registered accounts. By the time of the acquisition of Mail.Ru in 2010, the number of daily users was about 42 million. In 2022, ICQ had about 11 million monthly users.
