The US Defense Department recalled Russia’s defeats in the war and expressed the belief that the DPRK military, if sent in, would also become cannon fodder.
North Korean troops would become cannon fodder if they were sent to fight alongside Russian forces in Ukraine. Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder said this in a briefing on Tuesday, June 25.
He made the statement as deepening military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow raised speculation that Russia could ask North Korea to contribute troops to help in the war in Ukraine.
“If I were the military leader of North Korea, I would question my choice to send my forces as cannon fodder in an illegal war against Ukraine. We see the losses that Russia is suffering,” Ryder said.
He also commented during the talk that South Korea needs to consider the nuclear option amid dynamic military cooperation between Russia and the DPRK.
“Our policy has not changed, it is the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. We will work with our allies in South Korea and Japan and others in the region to ensure security and stability throughout the Indo-Pacific region,” he said.
Last week, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin reportedly agreed to a “strategic partnership” with North Korea. Kim Jong-un has expressed full support for Russia’s war on Ukraine. An agreement on a comprehensive strategic partnership was signed, which contained a clause providing for the immediate provision of military assistance by the parties to each other in the event of an armed attack.
Let’s remember that since the beginning of the mass invasion, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia has lost 536,840 personnel.
