The Council of the European Union approved a ban on access to four Russian media outlets, which, according to European authorities, pose a “significant and direct threat to public order and security” of the EU.

The decision was published on June 24 in the Official Journal of the EU.
It states that, starting from June 25, access to all organizations listed in the annex to the May 17 regulation will be limited in the European Union. It mentions:
-
“RIA News”;
-
“News”;
-
“Russian newspaper”;
-
Voice of Europe.
In mid-May, the European Union suspended their broadcasts, noting that the ban “on one or more subjects” would take effect no earlier than June 25, if the EU Council adopted a corresponding decision. The decision dated June 24 notes that the ban applies to all four organizations.
Access to the publications’ websites will be closed as part of restrictive measures taken in connection with “Russian actions destabilizing the situation in Ukraine.”
The EU statement notes that the mentioned Russian state-controlled media are engaged in propaganda and “play an important role in inciting and supporting Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and destabilizing the situation in neighboring countries.”
The European Union noted that it does not prohibit the mentioned media and their employees from engaging in other activities in the EU that are not related to speech, for example, conducting research and interviews.
In May, the European Union imposed sanctions against Viktor Medvedchuk, who lives in Russia, and the Voice of Europe publication he controls. The EU stated that the publication participated in an international campaign aimed at destabilizing the situation in Ukraine and the EU countries, and also financed the activities of propagandists and the creation of a network of influence on representatives of European political parties.
