Duke Henri, the eldest son of Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte’s five children, ascended the throne in 2000 after his father abdicated after 36 years in power.
Duke Henri of Luxembourg has announced that he intends to pass the throne to his son after a 24-year reign. The Daily Mail reported this.
The monarch announced his decision on National Day, an annual event when members of the royal family, government and parliament gather to celebrate the Grand Duke’s official birthday.
According to the Duke, the ceremony of transferring the throne will take place in October 2024.
“In this regard, I, together with the Grand Duchess, Prince Guillaume and Princess Stéphanie, would like to inform you that I have decided to transfer the title of Lieutenant to Prince Guillaume this October all the best,” He said.
This change means that Grand Duke Henri will retain his official title, but his son will assume all duties instead. The complete transformation of the Grand Duchy is likely to take several years.
As reported on the Palace’s official website, “the viceroy-representative traditionally goes through the process of changing the government.”
