Duke Henri himself came to the throne twenty-four years ago after the abdication of his father.
Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg announced plans to abdicate. Henri, now 69, has previously said that his son Guillaume will succeed him on the throne. The Daily Mail writes about it on Sunday, June 23.
“Grand Duke Henri made the surprising announcement on National Day, an annual event that brings together members of the Grand Duke’s family, members of the government and members of parliament to celebrate the official birthday of the Grand Duke. Said he will pass the throne to his 42-year-old son Guillaume.” – the publication wrote.
It is indicated that this event will take place in October 2024.
Grand Duke Henri will retain his official title, but will be represented instead by his son Guillaume.
Grand Duke Henri is the eldest of five children of Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte. He came to the throne in 2000 after his father abdicated after a 36-year reign.
Henri is married to Marie-Therese Mestre, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, a Cuban whose ancestry includes Spanish conquistadors. The couple has five children: Prince Guillaume, Princess Alexandra, Prince Louis, Prince Felix and Prince Sebastian.
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg borders France, Belgium and Germany. Half of the state’s population (more than 660 thousand people) are immigrants. Grand Duke Henri himself had family ties to almost all European monarchs.
Luxembourg has allocated 5 million euros to finance materials and equipment for Ukraine as part of the French-US-led Artillery coalition.
