This is stated by the BBC in a report from this Eastern European country.
This facility will be built against the backdrop of the expansion of the Mihail Kogălniceanu airbase: 10 thousand military personnel with their families will be able to live there. The area of the base is 2800 hectares.
Soon there will be a squadron of F-16s, MQ-9 Reaper drones and a military camp where NATO ground, air and naval forces from 32 countries will rotate. The base is located 20 km from the Black Sea coast and 300 km from Odessa.
We used to be here as a deterrent to Russian aggression. Now it’s more like assurances from other NATO countries that we are here and ready to defend,” says the Romanian pilot.
According to him, there has not yet been a single call to intercept a Russian aircraft, although they have been during previous missions over the Baltic.
The planes will fly past – this does not contradict international law. But we will place our plane next to the enemy plane. This shows the Russians that we are active, flying armed jets. It also gives us valuable intelligence, we record the serial numbers of the aircraft and the weapons they carry.
In one of the complexes, military personnel watch on radar screens how the war in Ukraine unfolds. We saw suicide bombers heading to Odessa… It’s quite surreal.
