The Ukrainian Defense Forces could receive these shells through third countries. Kyiv’s allies purchase ammunition from Belgrade and then transfer it to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The Financial Times reports this.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic says that selling shells is just business.
It’s part of our economic recovery and it’s important to us. Yes, we export our ammunition. We cannot export to Ukraine or Russia, but we have had many contracts with Americans, Spaniards, Czechs and other countries. What they do with it in the end is their business,” he told the FT.
The Serbian leader added that even if he knows where the shells will eventually land, it is no longer his business. For Vučić, it is important that they are legally sold abroad.
During the Cold War, Serbia, then part of Yugoslavia, had a powerful arms industry and was a producer of Soviet-style ammunition. Such ones now, in particular, use the APU. Serbian shells are cheaper than NATO-style ammunition, so Belgrade plans to increase arms exports.
As you know, Serbia does not officially support Ukraine in the war and traditionally remains committed to the aggressor country, Russia.
Let us recall that the defense concern Rheinmetall announced on June 20 that the German authorities had entered into a state order with it for the supply of NATO 155 mm caliber artillery shells with a range of 40 km. The exact amount of ammunition is not known, but the amount of the agreement is a record 8.5 billion euros. Some of these shells are also intended for Ukraine.
