One of the suspects in the attempt on the life of journalist Aidos Sadykov, Altay Zhakanbaev, is in prison in Kazakhstan. He personally contacted the internal affairs authorities. The Prosecutor General’s Office of Kazakhstan reported this on its Telegram channel on Saturday, June 22.

“Law enforcement agencies of Ukraine, showing efficiency and professionalism, quickly identified the perpetrators of this crime sent an international investigation order to the competent authorities of Ukraine to provide materials from in the criminal case of the involvement of Zhakanbayev and Karatayev in the crime,” said the statement.

The Prosecutor General’s Office reported that on June 21, Zhakanbaev independently turned to the internal affairs bodies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, where he was questioned on the circumstances of the case. On the same day he was detained on suspicion of attempted murder.

A second suspect, Meiram Karataev, is still being sought.

The Sadykovs moved to Ukraine from Kazakhstan in 2014. Aidos Sadykov has been subject to criminal prosecution in his homeland, according to him, for political reasons.

In Ukraine they got refugee status. Here they run their own Youtube channel, where they criticize the Kazakh authorities and oligarchs and speak in support of the protests in Kazakhstan in 2022.

In the fall of 2023, Aidos and Natalya Sadykov were placed on the wanted list of the Kazakh authorities on charges of inciting hatred.

As you know, on June 18 in Kyiv, an unknown person shot the driver of a car in Shevchenkovsky district and disappeared. Later it became known that the victim of the attack was the journalist Aidos Sadykov from Kazakhstan. He is known for criticizing the Kazakh authorities and President Kasim-Jomart Tokayev personally.

Subsequently, Tokayev said that Kazakhstan is ready to join the investigation into the attempted murder of a journalist in Kyiv.
