Then the most likely candidate was 57-year-old Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte. According to NATO rules, the appointment of a secretary general requires the approval of all countries.
On Tuesday, Hungary, Slovakia and Türkiye lifted their veto on Rutte’s figure. The Romanian authorities announced this today. This is the last country that has previously been against the Dutchman. In all likelihood, Rutte will be officially introduced as Stoltenberg’s successor next week.
The President of Romania has withdrawn his candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General. Consequently, this post is occupied by the Prime Minister of the Netherlands.
