Russia, despite its threats over Finland’s entry into NATO, has almost emptied its military bases on the common border.
Russian bases near the border with Finland, despite all threats by Moscow due to the neighboring country’s entry into NATO, are almost empty, as the Russian Federation has transferred personnel and equipment to the war against Ukraine . This was reported by the Finnish publication Yle, citing an intelligence source.
Russia has threatened Finland with “consequences” if it joins NATO and has pledged to build up its military presence along the border, but military bases in the region are emptier than a year ago.
“On average, 80% of equipment and soldiers were transferred to the war against Ukraine,” the report said.
The portion of withdrawn military personnel and equipment is slightly larger or smaller depending on the weather and planned exercises. Almost only instructors and recruits left in the military bases were sent to fight.
Yle also has satellite images of Russian bases that confirm certain changes. At the Russian military base near Petrozavodsk, in May 2024, compared to June 2023, dozens of equipment units located there were lost. However, a new hangar appeared there, which was not there, and the equipment was standing in the open air.
The intelligence interlocutor said that the air defense around St. Petersburg “remains, and it is quite strong.”

It was previously reported that NATO plans to build the headquarters of the Alliance’s ground forces in Finland.
