US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the Kremlin wants Ukraine to accept an unfair peace that “rewards” Russian aggression at gunpoint. The Permanent Representative made a corresponding statement during a briefing of the UN Security Council on Ukraine on Tuesday, June 18.
The official also recalled that US Vice President Camila Harris, at a summit in Switzerland, emphasized that Russia’s actions are “an outrageous attempt to conquer a free people and wipe a sovereign state from the face of the earth.”
Demanding that Ukraine withdraw from its internationally recognized territory before considering negotiations makes a mockery of the very principle the organization was created to reject: countries cannot acquire territory through force, she said.
The permanent representative added that while dozens of organizations gathered to discuss humanitarian aid and a plan to restore Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, Putin was preparing to discuss military weapons with North Korean leader Kim Jong-in.
Let us recall that on June 14, before the Peace Summit in Switzerland, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin said that in order to end the war, Ukraine must “withdraw its troops” from the territories of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions within the administrative borders. He also demanded that Ukraine refuse to join NATO.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky called the actions of Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin “new Nazism” and statements about the negotiations as ultimatums that cannot be trusted.
